Why Tyler Perry Should Build His Own Roku Channel and Television Network

Tyler Perry has already done something very few filmmakers in the world have accomplished. He built more than a film career, he built an entertainment empire.

He has movies, television shows, stage productions, characters, franchises, a massive production studio, and an audience that knows his name before they even see the title of the project.

So there is one question that becomes increasingly interesting in the streaming era, why shouldn’t Tyler Perry build a streaming network that is truly his?

Not just a production company.

Not just a collection of shows licensed to somebody else.

Not just a few FAST channels carrying his programming.

A real Tyler Perry entertainment network.

And there is already evidence that the audience for this kind of idea exists.

BET and Paramount have already created Tyler Perry Comedy and Tyler Perry Drama channels on Pluto TV. Paramount reported in September 2025 that those channels had surpassed 3 billion hours streamed, demonstrating the scale of demand for Perry’s programming in a free, ad supported environment.

That number is important because it shows something bigger than the success of an individual movie or television show.

It shows that Tyler Perry’s catalog itself can function like a television network.

Imagine a Tyler Perry Channel on Roku

Imagine turning on Roku and seeing a dedicated Tyler Perry channel.

Not simply one movie.

Not simply one television series.

A complete programming destination.

Tyler Perry movies could run throughout the day. Classic sitcoms could have scheduled blocks. Madea movies could have their own weekend programming. Drama could have a nighttime block. Comedy could dominate the evening. Behind the scenes footage could fill additional programming hours.

There could even be original programming created specifically for the network.

A viewer could open the channel and immediately understand what they are watching.

This is the difference between having content and having a media brand.

Roku’s ecosystem already demonstrates how specialized entertainment channels can work. Roku’s platform includes hundreds of live channels, thousands of on demand titles, and numerous branded channels built around individual personalities, franchises, and entertainment categories.

Tyler Perry would not be starting with an unknown brand.

He would be starting with Tyler Perry.

The Money Could Come From Multiple Directions

The biggest opportunity would not necessarily be charging every viewer a monthly subscription.

A Tyler Perry network could use multiple revenue streams.

Advertising could be one of the largest.

A free, ad supported Tyler Perry channel could generate revenue every time viewers watch programming. The more hours people watch, the more advertising inventory the network has to sell.

Then there could be premium options.

A subscription service could offer commercial free viewing, early access to new movies, exclusive television series, extended versions, behind the scenes material, stage productions, documentaries, and archived content.

There could also be rentals and purchases.

A brand new Tyler Perry movie could premiere through a premium rental window before eventually moving into the free catalog.

That creates a pipeline.

The same movie could potentially generate revenue through theatrical distribution, premium streaming, advertising supported streaming, licensing, international distribution, physical products, and eventually the library.

Instead of relying on one paycheck from one licensing agreement, the intellectual property could continue generating revenue across multiple stages.

How Much Could It Make?

There is no reliable public figure for how much a hypothetical Tyler Perry owned network would earn, because the result would depend on viewers, advertising rates, subscription pricing, content costs, distribution agreements, and international reach.

But the scale can be illustrated with hypothetical scenarios.

Imagine a free Tyler Perry channel eventually generated 500 million hours of viewing annually.

If advertising revenue averaged the equivalent of $20 per thousand monetized ad impressions, the actual revenue would depend heavily on how many ads were served and filled. At 10 monetized impressions per viewing hour, 500 million hours would produce roughly 5 billion impressions.

At $20 per thousand impressions, that would represent approximately $100 million in gross advertising revenue.

At 1 billion viewing hours with the same assumptions, the gross advertising opportunity would be approximately $200 million.

Those are illustrations, not forecasts.

And advertising would only be one piece of the business.

Suppose a premium Tyler Perry service eventually attracted 1 million subscribers at $6.99 per month. That would represent approximately $83.9 million in annual subscription revenue before platform fees, taxes, payment processing, content costs, marketing, and other expenses.

At 2 million subscribers, the same pricing would produce approximately $167.8 million annually before expenses.

The larger opportunity comes from combining the models.

Advertising.

Subscriptions.

Rentals.

Purchases.

Licensing.

International distribution.

Merchandise.

Live events.

Original productions.

And the enormous value of the library itself.

The Real Power Would Be Ownership

This is where the idea becomes particularly interesting.

Tyler Perry already works with major entertainment companies.

His current portfolio includes partnerships with Netflix, BET, and other major distributors. Netflix announced a multi year first look series agreement with Perry, while BET’s current partnership with Perry runs through 2028 and covers hundreds of new episodes.

Those partnerships can provide enormous reach.

But an owned network would provide something different.

Control.

If Perry owned the platform, he could decide how the catalog is organized, how viewers discover his projects, which projects receive promotion, how advertising is sold, what original programming gets produced, and how long content remains available.

He would essentially become his own programmer.

That is a completely different position in the entertainment business.

It Could Change the Culture

The cultural impact could potentially be even bigger than the financial opportunity.

Tyler Perry has spent decades creating stories centered around Black families, relationships, faith, comedy, struggle, success, forgiveness, and community.

A dedicated network could give those stories a permanent home.

Instead of waiting for a traditional network to decide whether a particular project fits its programming schedule, the network could be built around the audience that already exists.

It could also become a pipeline for new filmmakers.

Imagine a Tyler Perry network with a section specifically dedicated to emerging Black directors, writers, actors, comedians, and producers.

Imagine viewers discovering a new filmmaker immediately after watching a Madea movie.

That could turn the platform into more than a Tyler Perry library.

It could become an ecosystem.

The Next Generation Could Benefit

One of the most interesting possibilities would be using the network to discover talent.

Tyler Perry Studios already represents a major production operation in Atlanta. His official biography describes the studio as operating across more than 330 acres and notes that its productions have created hundreds of jobs.

A digital network could extend that ecosystem beyond the studio.

New writers could pitch series.

Independent filmmakers could submit projects.

Actors could be discovered through original programming.

Comedians could receive specials.

Young filmmakers could receive opportunities to develop short films.

The network could eventually become a destination where audiences do not simply watch Tyler Perry.

They discover the next Tyler Perry.

And It Does Not Have to Replace Netflix or BET

That may be the most important point.

An owned network would not necessarily mean Tyler Perry has to stop working with Netflix, BET, Paramount, or other companies.

In fact, the opposite could make more sense.

Major platforms could remain distribution partners.

A theatrical movie could still go to theaters.

A major series could still have a Netflix or BET relationship.

But the Tyler Perry network could become the permanent home for the larger library and additional programming.

Think of it as the headquarters.

Other platforms become distribution partners.

The owned network becomes the center of the universe.

The Roku Opportunity Is Especially Interesting

Roku is already one of the major connected television ecosystems, and Roku’s platform supports both free ad supported channels and premium subscription services. Roku says The Roku Channel reaches more than 100 million global streaming households through its platform relationships, according to 2026 corporate information.

That makes a dedicated Tyler Perry Roku channel potentially powerful.

And it would not have to stop at Roku.

The same network could potentially exist across Fire TV, Apple TV, smart televisions, mobile devices, web browsers, and other connected television platforms.

Eventually, the goal would not simply be to have a Tyler Perry Roku channel.

It would be to have the Tyler Perry network everywhere.

Tyler Perry Has Already Proven the Audience Exists

The most fascinating part of this idea is that Tyler Perry would not be starting from zero.

The audience already exists.

The catalog already exists.

The characters already exist.

The production company already exists.

The studio already exists.

The brand already exists.

And the current performance of Tyler Perry programming on FAST channels provides evidence that viewers will spend enormous amounts of time watching his work. Paramount’s reported 3 billion hours streamed for Tyler Perry Comedy and Tyler Perry Drama is particularly significant.

The question is therefore not whether Tyler Perry has enough content to fill a network.

He clearly does.

The bigger question is how much additional value could be created by bringing more of that ecosystem under one dedicated brand.

From Filmmaker to Network Owner

Tyler Perry has already crossed several boundaries in entertainment.

He went from playwright to filmmaker.

From filmmaker to television producer.

From actor to studio owner.

From content creator to media entrepreneur.

A fully owned streaming network would represent another evolution.

It would transform the question from, “Where can people watch Tyler Perry?”

to

“Where is Tyler Perry?”

That distinction could be enormous.

A network built around his movies, television shows, comedy, drama, stage productions, original programming, emerging filmmakers, and cultural storytelling could become a permanent piece of the streaming landscape.

And perhaps the biggest opportunity would be the one that cannot be measured immediately in dollars.

Ownership.

Owning the platform.

Owning the relationship with the audience.

Owning the programming destination.

Owning the ability to introduce the next generation of storytellers.

Tyler Perry has already shown that one creator can build an entertainment empire.

The next chapter could be building an entertainment network that gives that empire its own television screen.
